Almost three out of every four citizens in Spain, specifically 73.6%, are in favor of maintaining the extension of rental contracts, a measure in effect since last March 22 and which could become ineffective if it is not validated in the Congress of Deputies on April 28.

This data comes from a survey prepared by Atenea del Dato for the parliamentary group The Left, at the request of the MEP from Sumar Estrella Galán.

According to the study's conclusions, within that 73.6% of Spaniards who support the extension of rent controls, voters of Sumar (91%) and the PSOE (81%) are the most favorable to this measure. However, support is also significant among the electorate of the PP (65%) and Vox (60%).

Furthermore, 48.7% of the people surveyed state that they would reconsider "a lot" or "quite a bit" their vote if the party they support decides to reject the extension of rent controls in the Lower House. Among those who vote for the PP, this proportion is around 32%, while among those for Vox it is around 36%.

93% perceive rent as expensive or very expensive

The survey also reveals that nine out of ten Spaniards, 93.4%, consider that rental prices are "high" or "very high". This diagnosis is majority among both those who live renting (95.5%) and among owners (92.9%), and it remains regardless of having a mortgage or not.

Within this perception, the sensation that prices are "very high" predominates, an option that marks 73% of the responses.

The survey also collects that 48.6% of participants admit that they themselves or someone close to them has had to change housing in recent years due to the increase in rent or the landlord's refusal to renew the contract.

Likewise, 81.4% anticipate that, upon termination of the rental contract, rents will increase or, even, that the possibility of extending the agreement will not be offered.

The survey was carried out between April 10 and 16, in a context in which the extension of rents was already operational and had been requested by thousands of tenants.
