The legislative elections held this Sunday in Hungary, de facto posed as a plebiscite on the European Union, and the resounding triumph of the openly pro-European candidate, Péter Magyar, have provoked a cascade of congratulatory messages from heads of State and Government, as well as from high-ranking officials of the community institutions.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has stressed on social media that "Europe's heart beats stronger tonight in Hungary." In a second post, she emphasized that "Hungary has chosen Europe." "Europe has always chosen Hungary. A country claims its European path. The Union is strengthened," she highlighted.

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, has shared on his networks an image with Magyar, whom he has telephoned to convey his recognition for the electoral result. "France celebrates this victory, which represents a triumph of democratic participation, the commitment of the Hungarian people to the values of the European Union and Hungary's place in Europe," he stated. "Together, let's build a more sovereign Europe, for the security of our continent, our competitiveness and our democracy," he added.

In similar terms, the German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, has expressed himself, who has sent his "heartfelt congratulations" to Magyar. "I hope to work with you. Let's join forces for a strong, secure and, above all, united Europe," he posted.

From Sweden, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has put the focus on the "historic" victory of Magyar's formation. "It is a new chapter in the history of Hungary," he has underlined.

The Prime Minister of Estonia, Kristen Michal, has spoken of a "historic choice" for "a free and strong Hungary" within a "united Europe" and that has "rejected the forces that ignore its interests". Along the same lines, the Latvian Prime Minister, Evika Silina, has conveyed her congratulations to Magyar for his "historic victory". "I look forward to working with you in favor of common European values and interests," she stated.

Completing the Baltic trio, the Lithuanian president, Gitanas Nauseda, has called the result a "great victory for Europe". "Congratulations to Péter Magyar. There are many things we could and should do for democracy, justice, and peace," he stated.

Also expressing their support have been the Croatian Prime Minister, Andrej Plenkovic; the Irish Head of Government, Micheál Martin, and the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, who has recalled that "Hungary's place is in the heart of Europe."
