Álvaro Sánchez Cotrina has won the PSOE of Extremadura primaries and will become the new general secretary of the socialist federation, after defeating Soraya Vega in an internal process that marks a turning point in the party. The 39-year-old mayor of Salorino also becomes the first leader from the province of Cáceres to lead the Extremaduran PSOE.

A relay in full change of political cycle

The election of Sánchez Cotrina arrives at a key moment for the PSOE in Extremadura, after the loss of the autonomous Government in 2023 and a recent period marked by internal instability. In recent years, the federation has chained several leaderships, breaking with the tradition of more prolonged leaderships.

The new secretary general takes over after the resignation of Miguel Ángel Gallardo, who left the post in December after the adverse electoral result. Since then, the party has been led by a caretaker committee.

A victory in primaries with high participation

The voting day has proceeded normally in the 197 centers enabled throughout Extremadura, with more than 9,000 militants called to participate in the process. The result consolidates Sánchez Cotrina as the new internal reference of the party in the community.

His profile combines institutional experience —as mayor— and training in Law and Public Administration, in a bid to renew the leadership of the Extremaduran PSOE.

The Extremaduran PSOE begins its reorganization

The appointment now opens a new phase within the party, which will culminate next April 25 with the celebration of its regional congress in Mérida, where the new leadership will be defined.

This process will be key to reorganize the internal structure and define the political strategy for the upcoming electoral cycles, in a scenario in which the PSOE seeks to recover space after its departure from the autonomous Executive.
