The Secretary-General of the UN, António Guterres, has expressed this Tuesday his deep concern over the recent statements by the president of the United States, Donald Trump, who has warned that "an entire civilization will die tonight" if Iran does not comply with his demands.

In a statement from his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, Guterres has indicated being "deeply concerned" in the face of statements that "suggest that entire civilian populations could suffer the consequences of political and military decisions".

"There is no military objective that justifies the total destruction of a society's infrastructure, nor inflicting deliberate suffering on civilian populations", highlighted the spokesperson.

In addition, the secretary-general made an urgent appeal for the restoration of the liberation of the Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately 20% of the world's oil transits, and whose security has been threatened by recent hostilities. Guterres warned that the blockade of the strait has a devastating impact on the world's most vulnerable populations, and underscored the need to guarantee the safe passage of vessels to protect both global trade and regional stability.
