The Iranian Revolutionary Guard has claimed to have attacked in the early hours of this Saturday a US military support vessel in the vicinity of the port of Salalah, in Oman, in a new episode of the regional escalation.

Attack in waters near Oman

According to Iranian military sources, the ship was at “a considerable distance” from the Omani port, in a strategic area of the Arabian Sea. From Tehran, they wanted to emphasize that the operation did not violate Oman's sovereignty, which they have defined as a “brotherly and friendly” country.

The spokesperson for the Khatam al-Anbiya Headquarters, quoted by the Tasnim agency, insisted that Iran fully respects Omani territorial integrity, trying to avoid tensions with one of the region's main diplomatic actors.

Oman, key piece in the mediation

The incident occurs in a particularly delicate context, as Oman has played a central role as a mediator between the United States and Iran in the months prior to the outbreak of the conflict.

In fact, Muscat hosted three rounds of nuclear negotiations between both parties before the start of the war, approximately one month ago. Furthermore, in early March, the Omani government itself accused Israel of influencing Donald Trump to precipitate Washington's entry into the conflict.

New attack in Saudi Arabia

In parallel, the Revolutionary Guard has stated that it also hit a US tanker plane at the Al Jarj airbase, in Saudi Arabia, in a missile attack carried out the previous day.

This double movement suggests an expansion of Iran's radius of action, which would be striking both naval targets and strategic facilities linked to the United States in different parts of the region.

Escalation and strategic message

The actions claimed by Tehran reflect an increase in military pressure on American assets, at a time when diplomatic channels remain open but weakened.

At the same time, the emphasis on respecting Oman shows that Iran tries to avoid completely breaking mediation channels, maintaining a certain balance between military confrontation and the possibility of negotiation.
