Iran has raised the tone of its warnings to the United States amid a military escalation in the Middle East. The Iranian military command has assured that any attempt at ground intervention by Washington would have “devastating” consequences for its troops, in a message that reinforces the tension between both countries after weeks of cross-attacks.

Direct threat to a land intervention

Lieutenant Colonel Ebrahim Zolfagari, spokesman for the Khatam al-Anbia Central Headquarters —a structure that coordinates the regular Army and the Revolutionary Guard—, has warned that a ground operation would end with a “humiliating capture” of American soldiers.

In statements released by the semi-official agency Tasnim, the spokesman has assured that a military incursion would not only fail, but would entail the “dismemberment and disappearance” of the invading forces, in one of the most aggressive statements launched by Tehran since the beginning of the conflict.

A message in full war escalation

The warning comes in a context of growing confrontation between Iran, the United States and Israel, after the bombings on Iranian strategic infrastructures and Tehran's subsequent response in different points of the region.

Although until now the confrontation has been marked by air attacks, drone operations and indirect actions, the possibility of a ground intervention remains one of the most feared scenarios, both for its military cost and for the risk of a large-scale regional war.

The Persian Gulf, strategic point

Zolfagari has made explicit reference to the Persian Gulf, a key area for global energy traffic and where Iran maintains a strong military presence.

The message seeks to underscore Tehran's ability to operate in that environment and deter any attempt at a US ground deployment, at a time when tensions also affect trade routes and the international oil price.

Rhetorical escalation and risk of open conflict

The hardening of the discourse by Iran reflects an increase in pressure in the conflict, in which military rhetoric has intensified in parallel with operations on the ground.

For now, the United States has not confirmed plans for ground intervention, but Iranian statements show that Tehran is preparing for a scenario of greater confrontation, raising the risk of an open conflict in the region.
