The tension in Iraq has escalated again this weekend after an exchange of attacks between US forces and armed militias linked to the Iraqi security apparatus, in an episode that reflects the growing regional impact of the conflict in the Middle East.
Cross Attacks in the North and in Baghdad
Official and security sources have confirmed a series of incidents both in the north of the country and in the capital, Baghdad, where bombings, drone attacks, and activation of anti-aircraft systems have been registered.
The coalition of pro-government militias known as Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) has reported that its positions in Nineveh province were the target of airstrikes that they attribute to the United States and Israel.
Bombings on pro-Iranian militias
According to the statement released by the FMP, at least three bombings hit facilities of the 14th Brigade, comprised of the Kataib Sayid al Shuhada militia, considered close to Iran.
The group has qualified the operation as a “treacherous attack”, although it has not offered for the moment an official balance of victims or material damages.
These militias, although formally integrated into the Iraqi security system, operate in many cases with autonomy and maintain direct ties with Tehran, which adds complexity to the scenario.
Response with drones and tension in the capital
In parallel, the Iraqi capital has been the scene of several drone incidents. A colonel from the Ministry of Interior reported that anti-aircraft defenses shot down two drones aimed at a base with US presence near Baghdad International Airport.
Furthermore, another unmanned device crashed in the Karrada neighborhood without causing casualties, while during the night the United States embassy was the target of another air attack that was intercepted by the defense systems of the diplomatic mission.
None of these attacks has been claimed so far, although they occur in a context of growing activity of armed groups in the region.
Iraq, stage of the regional war
These clashes evidence how Iraq is consolidating itself again as an indirect scenario of the conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran, with local militias acting as key actors in this dynamic.
The country, which already lived years of instability due to the presence of armed groups and international intervention, is once again situated in the center of geopolitical tensions.
Risk of escalation in the region
The exchange of attacks increases the risk of a major escalation, especially if actions against American targets intensify or if Washington responds directly.
For now, the situation remains in a fragile balance, but the multiplication of incidents in different parts of the country points to a sustained increase in military pressure within the framework of the regional conflict.
