The Spanish Government has evacuated its embassy in Iran amidst the growing tension in the Middle East.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, has confirmed that the Spanish ambassador and essential staff who remained in Tehran have left the country and have crossed the border into Azerbaijan.

As Albares himself has explained, all of them are safe.

The diplomatic staff left Tehran

The evacuation has occurred after the diplomatic staff remaining in the Iranian capital abandoned the embassy headquarters.

The group subsequently crossed the border with Azerbaijan, in an operation coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The minister has assured that the security of Spanish citizens and of the foreign service is the main priority of the Government.

The embassies in the region remain operational

Despite the evacuation in Iran, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has indicated that the rest of the Spanish embassies in the Middle East remain operational.

In addition, the Ministry's crisis room remains active 24 hours a day, with emergency lines to assist Spanish citizens who may be in the region.

The Government has reiterated that it will continue working to guarantee the protection of Spaniards abroad.
