The Department of Defense of the United States would have discreetly intensified the planning of possible military operations in Cuba, according to what the American media outlet USA Today has revealed, citing anonymous sources knowledgeable about the case.

According to the information, the Pentagon would be developing intervention scenarios in case President Donald Trump gives the order, which would imply a qualitative leap in the escalation between Washington and Havana.

A turn in the crisis open since January

The reinforcement of military planning occurs within the framework of a crisis that has been dragging on since the beginning of the year, when the Trump Administration decided to cut the supply of oil to the island as part of a strategy to force political changes in the Cuban regime.

That energy blockade has aggravated the internal situation of the country and is part of a broader pressure that seeks, according to various reports, to provoke a political transition on the island.

Although in parallel there have been diplomatic contacts to explore a possible economic agreement, positions remain distant and the margin for compromise is limited.

Trump:  “We can do anything”

The tensions have been fueled in recent days by the American president's own statements. Trump has openly hinted at the possibility of acting on Cuba, going so far as to state that he could “take it” or “free it” and that he has the capacity to do “anything” in relation to the island.

In that same vein, the leader has let slip that, once the conflict with Iran has ended, his attention could focus on the Caribbean, which has triggered speculation about a possible new geopolitical front.
