Donald Trump has offered new details about the man arrested after the foiled assassination attempt during the White House Correspondents' Dinner. In statements to Fox News, the US president stated that the suspect had drafted an anti-Christian manifesto and that it reflected a high level of hatred.

According to Trump, the content of that document evidenced that it was a person “who was not well”. The president also added that the detainee’s own family knew that he was going through personal difficulties and previous problems.

Defense of the security system

In the same interview, broadcast on the program The Sunday Briefing, Trump tried to downplay the criticism that arose after the incident and defended the actions of the security forces.

The president assured that the suspect was intercepted before reaching the ballroom of the Hilton Hotel, where the gala was taking place, and stressed that at no time did he manage to penetrate the central area of the event.

That message seeks to reinforce the official version that the Secret Service acted quickly and avoided a major threat, amid the open debate about how the attacker managed to bring weapons into the venue and get close to an event with the presence of the president, the first lady, and high-ranking government officials.
