The Pakistani prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif, has proposed to the US president, Donald Trump, a two-week postponement to advance negotiations with Iran and, at the same time, asked Tehran to keep the Strait of Hormuz open during that period "as a gesture of goodwill", according to the agency Reuters.

The initiative comes amid a full escalation of tension: this Tuesday the ultimatum imposed by Trump on Iran expired, which demanded the immediate reopening of the strait and threatened attacks on strategic infrastructure in case of non-compliance.

For his part, Trump has been informed of Pakistan's proposal and an official response is expected in the coming hours, at a critical moment for regional security and the global economy.
