PP challenges PSOE and overturns its law for network control after offering a pact to renew the CNMC

Few things cost the PP more than resisting the temptation to overturn a Government initiative. And not even sharing its philosophy. It advanced its endorsement, by support or abstention, to the PSOE's reform to give new powers to the National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC)... and ended up 'killing' it together with Vox and Junts.

The 'populars' had even offered the PSOE a pact. “If they want a final vote, renew the CNMC in a plural and independent way. They have a little over a month,” warned the ‘popular’ Mario Cortés from the stand.

They would not let the reform fall, which depended on their votes, but they demanded to agree on the renewal of the Council of this body. Its president, Cani Fernández, concludes her term next June.

The last renewal, undertaken in 2025 and which reached the vice-presidency of the body, was completed without the PP's involvement. The Executive tried to agree with the PP on the renewal of the Bank of Spain, CNMC and CNMV, but the ‘populars’ refused to enter negotiations by not accepting José Luis Escrivá as the new governor of the Bank of Spain.

They did not wait to receive a response. During the votes, they voted against the admission for processing of the bill, which empowers the supervisor in the surveillance of the Internet, with capabilities to request information, carry out investigations, inspections and sanction operators who violate the European regulation.

The reform, driven by the PSOE, faced this Tuesday its first vote in Congress and arrived at the debate without enough votes so as not to depend on the PP.

ERC and Junts distanced themselves considering that the election of the CNMC as coordinator of digital services violated the competencies of the Generalitat in matters of competition. ERC announced its abstention and Junts directly opposes the initiative.
