The president of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, chose this Thursday an Iranian woman victim of the regime of the ayatollahs to defend the banner of feminism. He did so during the Free Women event, organized by this party and held in the Constitutional hall of the Congress of Deputies.

From this space, packed with people and with attendees who followed the event standing for more than two and a quarter hours, Feijóo thanked the testimony of the Iranian activist Masih Alinejad, a journalist currently residing in the United States and forced to leave her country due to the persecution of a regime that has tried to assassinate her up to three times.

The leader of the opposition appealed for a feminism without borders, without ideology, but with principles. He assured that "Iran cannot wait another 40 years" living under these conditions of oppression and warned that one cannot continue with “badges” while the Iranian people continue to be murdered.

"Sánchez lies to the Spaniards"

He affirmed that the best defense of peace in this area is not that of the burqa nor that of the shroud, but that of the freedom of people. Pedro Sánchez -the Galician leader pointed out- cannot give lessons in morality. “He cannot speak of peace nor of patriotism. One must have morals, and not an environment stained by corruption. Whoever asks for respect for international law first has to respect national law”, he pointed out. And whoever wants to be a patriot -he added- “cannot make agreements with those who seek the destruction of Spain”.

Regarding diplomatic crises, Feijóo pointed out the discrepancies that, in his opinion, Sánchez's Executive has opened with “the United States, the Middle East and the European Union itself, with which Spain has lost credibility”. “As always -he added-, Sánchez lies to NATO, to the EU and lies to the Spanish people. He has betrayed and lied to everyone”.

Masih Alinejad's intervention was preceded by the inaugural speech of Ester Muñoz, spokesperson for the Popular Group, and by a dialogue between the Cuban dissident Rosa Payá and the popular deputy Jaime de los Santos.

"The wind in the hair"

Author of The wind in her hair -symbol of freedom- and contributing editor of IranWire, Alinejad made a passionate defense of the freedom of the Iranian people and the end of the clerics' regime. In her conversation in English with the Popular Party deputy Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo, the Iranian journalist defended the need to eradicate the current Iranian regime.

“This is neither left-wing nor right-wing… this is oppression,” he/she affirmed.

"That's why I'm here in Spain -he explained-. The terrorist regime... its embassies are open and Iranian officials enjoy diplomacy here. That's why I say: Sánchez, prime minister, how dare you use the wounded bodies of Israelis? More than 30,000 people... use those bodies as political ammunition against other parties. For domestic battles?", he denounced.

“This -he stated- has nothing to do with right or left. This has nothing to do with politics. This is oppression. We don't like war. A normal politician condemns a massacre; a normal person, a normal human being, when they see bodies piled up in the streets, condemns it”, he reproached the President of the Government.

“At least -he added- they say a phrase to show their feeling. But the Spanish prime minister decided to remain silent in the face of a massacre. And suddenly he feels a lot for the terrorists and is on the side of the murderers,” he accused.

“It is important -she remarked- that an Iranian woman says what she thinks. I counted the prime minister's words to understand how a politician can talk about terrorists and say he wants to stop the war without mentioning the real war that falls upon us, the Iranians”.

“Join the people of Iran”

“How many women are here?”, she asked herself. “All of you are criminals for the ayatollahs of my country,” she warned. “How many men here support women? It is a shame to pretend to stop the war without condemning the war imposed against women,” she pointed out.

“The prime minister -he recommended- should understand that we, the people of Iran, never wanted this war to come. But this is what the Islamic Republic provokes -he stressed-, which is the cause.” Therefore, he concluded: “If we want to end the Islamic Republic, if we want to end the war, we must unite with the people of Iran to achieve it.”

Tribute to Alejo Vidal-Quadras

The day dedicated to Free Women was attended by writers such as Lucía Etxebarría; journalists and lawyers such as Lupe Sánchez; and former politicians such as Rocío Monasterio and Iván Espinosa de los Monteros.

Among the attendees was also Alejo Vidal-Quadras, former leader of Vox and victim of an attack allegedly linked to the Iranian regime. His presence prompted an applauded tribute from the attendees.

At the culmination of the event, with the room packed, Feijóo recalled that the Popular Party was a pioneer in placing women in key positions in Spanish politics. He cited, among other examples, Soledad Becerril and Esperanza Aguirre at the head of the two Chambers of the Cortes; Loyola de Palacio, first vice-president of the European Commission; and María Fernanda Rudi.
