Jordi Pujol has been summoned by the Audiencia Nacional within the trial investigating his family's fortune in Andorra, a case in which the Prosecutor's Office requests nine years in prison for the alleged illicit origin of those funds. According to information released by the EFE Agency, the court has ordered his appearance within the framework of the ongoing judicial proceeding.

Before his statement, the National Court has ordered a forensic examination to determine if the former president is in physical and cognitive condition to testify. This medical report is decisive in deciding whether he finally testifies at trial or is exempted from doing so for health reasons.

The former president, elderly, has traveled to Madrid to undergo that medical evaluation prior to the trial. The court's decision depends on the result of the examination, which will be what determines whether his appearance takes place in court or if another procedural measure is adopted.

The Pujol family's heritage

The case focuses on the investigation into the Pujol family's assets and their possible origin in illegal commissions during the period when Jordi Pujol chaired the Generalitat de Catalunya between 1980 and 2003. This judicial proceeding has been under investigation for years and has gone through different procedural phases to reach the current trial.

The defense maintains that the former president's health status hinders his participation in the process, while the court has considered it necessary to verify it through a report

In this context, today's appearance is conditioned by the medical evaluation, which will determine if Jordi Pujol finally declares before the court or if the procedure continues without his direct testimony in this phase of the trial.
