The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, announced this Thursday the reopening of the Spanish Embassy in Iran with the aim of supporting "the effort for peace" in the Middle East during the two weeks of ceasefire agreed between Washington and Tehran.

"Given the new situation and that we have two weeks ahead, I have instructed the ambassador in Tehran (Antonio Sánchez-Benedito Gaspar) to return, to take charge again and reopen the Spanish Embassy in Tehran and that we join from all the vectors we can, including the capital of Iran, in that effort for peace," Albares stated to the media before his intervention in the Foreign Affairs Committee of Congress.

The Spanish diplomatic legation in Tehran was temporarily closed and its staff evacuated at the beginning of March, amidst a full-blown military escalation in the Middle East after the attack by the United States and Israel against Iran. Although Washington and Tehran have agreed to a two-week ceasefire, Tel Aviv's bombings on Lebanon continue and, in fact, have intensified in recent hours.
