The Kings have paid their last respects to the journalist and former director of Radio Nacional de España (RNE) Diego Carcedo, who died this Sunday at 86 years old, and whom they have defined as the "voice of international journalism" and a "witness to history".

In a message disseminated on the social network X, the Royal House has highlighted Carcedo's "gaze", which "helped to understand reality even in the most complex scenarios".

"In every story told with rigor, courage and commitment to the truth, his mark will endure," they have stated, extending their condolences to family and friends of the journalist.

Career as correspondent and head of RNE

Born in Cangas de Onís (Asturias) on March 24, 1940, Carcedo developed a long career in different media. He began in print journalism and later focused his professional work on radio and television.

He was a foreign correspondent for Televisión Española, went on to direct the news services, and held the directorship of RNE between 1991 and 1996. Subsequently, he was part of the board of directors of RTVE (1996-2007) and in 2018 he chaired the Committee of Experts in charge of proposing the members of the board of directors of RTVE, in addition to running to chair the Television Academy.

Throughout his career, he was distinguished with numerous awards, among them the Cirilo Rodríguez Award (1985), the extraordinary Golden Antenna (1992), and the APEI Award from the Professional Association of Radio and Television Informers (1996). Likewise, he wrote several books, such as 'Rifles and Carnations' (1999) and 'Between Beasts and Heroes' (2011), the latter recognized with the Espasa Essay Award.
