The Secretary of State for the Environment, Hugo Morán, has highlighted in the O Burgo estuary the actions that the central Government is carrying out in this environment with the objective of adapting to climate change and the rise in sea level.

During his visit, he emphasized the Executive's commitment to the decontamination of the estuary and to the works on the coastline. "In the set of interventions by the Demarcación de Costas in the province of A Coruña, we are talking about an investment package of 80 million euros."

As he explained, interventions that allow "returning to all citizens the use and enjoyment of a space of very high ecological value" have been preferentially selected, "we are probably talking about the sections of highest environmental value on the Galician coast, which is what the estuaries represent as a whole."

Morán stressed that with these actions "we are returning to citizens spaces that had been historically stolen to put them at the service of private activities of all kinds, without any environmental prevention." In relation specifically to the O Burgo estuary, he recalled that "it became a real sewer, a dump against the interest of all citizens."

He pointed out that "along with this action, we are taking advantage of a criterion for intervention on the coast that means anticipating adaptation mechanisms against climate change." In the specific case of the O Burgo estuary, he mentioned the effects of rising sea levels and the need to review certain urban planning actions.

In this regard, he detailed that work is being carried out to adapt the coastline "in such a way that we have a capacity for prevention against these phenomena that are already absolutely inevitable." Thanks to this, he assured that the promenade "is perfectly saved from the invasion of water during high tides."

During the visit, in which the Deputy Government Delegate in A Coruña, Julio Abalde, also participated, the Secretary of State referred to other interventions in the province, coinciding with the day on which the Official State Gazette (BOE) publishes the announcement from the Demarcación de Costas de Galicia on the final approval of the project "Restoration of the marshes of the Mera cove in the Ortigueira estuary."

Demand to the Xunta and new section of promenade

The event also counted with the presence of the spokesperson for the local government of A Coruña, José Manuel Lage, who has highlighted the State's investment, with "more than 800,000 euros in the A Coruña section," he specified.

Following up on these actions, Lage has called on the Xunta to assume its responsibility and has considered it "urgent" to promote a mobility policy designed from a metropolitan perspective. "It is essential," he stated.

These statements were made during the tour of the works being carried out next to the freezer located in the area, which will make possible the opening of a new 470-meter section of promenade in the A Pasaxe area.

This new public space, within the municipal district of A Coruña and connected to the promenade of Culleredo surrounding the O Burgo estuary, will have a three-meter-wide pedestrian path and a cycle lane, thus expanding the options for citizen use and sustainable mobility in the coastal environment.
