The spokesperson for Water of the PP Group in Les Corts, María Gómez, has lashed out against "the sectarian and ideological policy of the Government of Pedro Sánchez against the Tajo-Segura transfer", after it was learned that the Supreme Court has rejected the contentious-administrative appeal filed by the Central Union of Irrigators of the Tajo-Segura Aqueduct (SCRATS) against the revision of the Hydrological Plan of the Spanish part of the Tajo Hydrographic Demarcation, approved by royal decree 35/2023.

In a note, Gómez has stressed that "this ruling represents a new blow for thousands of farmers and families in the province of Alicante who live off the land and who have been suffering for years from the unjustified cuts to the transfer promoted by the Sánchez Government".

According to the 'popular' deputy, "the PSOE's water policy is condemning our agriculture, putting at risk employment, investments and the future of a strategic sector for the Comunitat Valenciana", and has emphasized that "irrigators have been demanding dialogue, consensus and technical criteria for years against political decisions made from Madrid's offices".

The parliamentarian has criticized that the central Executive "has used hydrological planning to progressively reduce available water without listening to farmers, irrigators' communities or affected territories", and has denounced that "while other territories receive investments and support, the Government punishes Alicante with more cuts, more uncertainty and more attacks on an efficient, sustainable and essential agricultural model for the Spanish economy".

Demand for a great national water pact

Given this scenario, Gómez has asserted the urgency of "a great national water pact based on solidarity between territories, technical rigor and the guarantee of water resources for those who generate wealth and employment".

Likewise, she has reiterated the PPCV's support "for the defense of the Tajo-Segura transfer, of the irrigators and of Alicante agriculture against a Government that has turned its back on the countryside", and has warned that "the province of Alicante cannot continue paying the price of Pedro Sánchez's political pacts. We need solutions, water investments and security for our farmers, no more attacks or unilateral decisions".
