The judicial evolution of the Plus Ultra case could have a new political derivative in the Senate. The Popular Party is considering summoning former President of the Government José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero again to the Koldo case investigation commission following his judicial situation in the case being handled by the National Court, as reported by RTVE.
The possibility of a new appearance comes after the judicial investigation has taken a leap with new proceedings and with the procedural involvement of the former president in a particularly sensitive case due to its political scope. The PP's reaction directly links to the appearance Zapatero made just a few months ago in the Upper House, when he flatly denied any relationship with the public bailout of Plus Ultra.
From Alberto Núñez Feijóo's party, the public stance is now to await the immediate evolution of the judicial procedure before deciding whether to formally push for this new parliamentary move. The strategy is evident: to confront the former president's previous political statements with the new scenario opened in the National Court.
The appearance in the Koldo commission
Zapatero appeared in March before the Senate investigation commission promoted by the PP, focused on the so-called Koldo case and its possible political derivatives. During that appearance, the former president denied having had any involvement in the Plus Ultra bailout, one of the most controversial operations approved during the pandemic.
His appearance took place in the context of a strong parliamentary offensive by the Popular Party, which sought to broaden the political focus on various decisions adopted by the Government and its environment. In that session, Zapatero denied having received commissions linked to the airline and rejected any role as an intermediary with the Administration.
What margin does the Senate now have
The possibility of a new summons would depend on the political will of the majority driving the commission and the focus the PP wishes to give to this new phase. Parliamentary commissions can summon the same person again if they consider that there are new relevant elements for their political investigation.
Now, the practical course of that decision will also depend on the procedural moment in which the judicial case finds itself. If the criminal proceedings advance or there are sensitive investigations underway, the legal context may condition the political margin for a new appearance.
The political response
The judicial situation of Zapatero has opened a new political front between the Government and the opposition. While the PP demands explanations and explores new parliamentary initiatives, the socialist environment has insisted on the defense of the former president and on the presumption of innocence.
Beyond the immediate political clash, the decision on a possible new appearance will depend on whether the PP considers that the new judicial scenario justifies reopening a parliamentary interrogation of someone who already denied any involvement in the matter just a few weeks ago.
