The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) will launch from 3:00 PM on Thursday, April 30 the Special May 1 Operation, a device that will extend until midnight on Sunday, May 3 and that foresees more than 6,040,000 road trips throughout Spain.

The operation seeks to provide coverage for one of the periods of greatest mobility of the year, with an estimated average of 1.5 million daily trips, especially towards coastal areas, mountain areas, and second homes.

Maximum media deployment and intensive surveillance

The DGT will have the participation of the Traffic Civil Guard, management centers, air assets, drones, and automated control systems such as radars and cameras to monitor the use of seatbelts and mobile phones.

The device also includes regulatory measures such as reversible lanes, alternative routes, and restrictions on heavy traffic, with the aim of alleviating the main exit and return routes, especially in the peninsular center.

Works on the road will also be halted and events that could affect traffic during the bridge will be limited.

Call for prudence

The DGT has insisted on the need to exercise extreme caution when driving and has recalled that prevention and prudence are key to avoiding accidents during a period of high traffic intensity.

Among the main recommendations are avoiding distractions, not consuming alcohol or drugs, respecting speed limits, and checking the vehicle before starting the trip.

Mandatory use of the V16 beacon

One of the highlights of the operation is the mandatory use of the V16 luminous beacon in case of breakdown or accident, a system that allows the vehicle to be signaled immediately and alerts other drivers through real-time traffic systems.

The drivers will be able to consult the state of the roads through the official channels of the DGT, including social networks, informative bulletins and the phone 011, in addition to the weather forecasts of the Agencia Estatal de Meteorología.
