Atmospheric instability will continue to mark the weather in Spain over the next few days. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) maintains active warnings for storms and intense rains in different autonomous communities due to the forecast of new episodes of heavy showers, hail, and intense wind gusts.
Tuesday and Wednesday appear as the most complicated days of the week, especially in areas of the peninsular interior, the north, and the northeast of the country. According to official forecasts, many of the storms could develop with intensity during the afternoon and unleash large amounts of rain in a short time.
AEMET also points out that the situation will be accompanied by a mass of cold air at high altitude that will favor the growth of developing clouds and the appearance of locally strong storms in large areas of the territory.
Weather advisories affect communities such as Castilla y León, Aragón, Cataluña, Navarra, País Vasco, La Rioja and various points in the peninsular center. In some cases, the precipitation may be accompanied by hail and strong gusts of wind associated with thunderstorm cells.
Tuesday, the most unstable day
The official forecast points to Tuesday as the moment of greatest instability of this episode. During the afternoon, a notable increase in developing clouds is expected in a large part of the peninsular interior, with showers and thunderstorms that could be locally strong.
AEMET warns that some storms may reach strong or very strong intensity in areas of the northeast and the northern half. There is also a risk of associated adverse phenomena, such as abundant electrical activity, hail, and intense wind gusts.
Precipitation will be less likely in areas of the Mediterranean coast and the southwestern Iberian Peninsula, although isolated showers are not ruled out in some places either.
In parallel, temperatures will continue below the usual values for this time of year in many areas of the country. The influx of cold air will maintain an environment more typical of early spring than mid-May.
More storms on Wednesday
The situation will not change too much during Wednesday. AEMET's forecast maintains the possibility of storms in large areas of the interior, especially in mountainous areas and regions of the peninsular north and east.
The rains may again be intense locally and repeat during the afternoon, when daytime heating favors the development of convective cloudiness again.
In some high areas of the Pyrenees, weak snowfalls could even be recorded due to the thermal descent forecast in the upper layers of the atmosphere.
AEMET also highlights that the wind could intensify in areas affected by storms, with strong or very strong gusts at times.
A week marked by cold air
The meteorological agency relates this episode to the presence of cold air at high altitudes over the Iberian Peninsula, a situation that increases atmospheric instability and favors the formation of intense storms during spring.
According to the weekly forecast published by AEMET, the weather will continue to be cooler than normal for this time of year until at least the second half of the week.
The forecast also points to the instability possibly beginning to subside gradually from Thursday, although scattered showers could still remain in some areas of the north and east of the peninsula.
During the last few days, intense storms and hailstorms have already been registered in different parts of the country, with significant accumulations of rain in short periods of time.
Faced with this situation, Civil Protection and emergency services recommend consulting updated official notices and exercising extreme caution in travel, outdoor activities, and areas susceptible to flash floods or sudden rises.
AEMET also recalls that spring storms can experience rapid changes in intensity and location, which is why it insists on following meteorological developments through its official channels.
