The weather map leaves, however, two very different scenarios: while the north maintains rain, cloudy skies and risk of hail, the Mediterranean area will register a rise in temperatures, with values that can be around 25 degrees in parts of the Valencian Community and Catalonia.
The AEMET warns of a Sunday with Spain split in two
Spain faces a Sunday of contrasts. Instability will continue to dominate a large part of the map, with cloudy or overcast skies, rain and storms in several areas of the north, while the eastern third of the peninsula begins to notice a thermal rise after days of cooler weather.
The AEMET forecasts showers and locally strong storms in the eastern end of the Cantabrian Sea and in western Galicia, two of the areas where the weather will be most adverse during the day. In Navarra, storm warnings include the possibility of hail and very strong wind gusts on the Cantabrian slope.
The situation leaves a very clear photograph: umbrellas and surveillance in the north; rise in temperatures and more clear skies in the Mediterranean.
Where it can rain harder
The most relevant precipitation will be concentrated in the north of the peninsula. Galicia, the Basque Country, and Navarre will be some of the areas most exposed to showers, with the possibility of locally strong storms and hail.
Precipitation is also expected in the vicinity of the Central System and in mountainous areas, although with irregular distribution. Instability will be more persistent in the northwest quadrant, where cloudiness will tend to remain for a good part of the day.
Instead, the scenario will be more stable in a good part of the east and southeast of the peninsula. In areas of Andalusia, Murcia, and southern Valencia, the probability of rain will be lower and clear skies will gain ground as the day progresses.
Hail in the north and risk on the road
Hail will be one of the elements to watch in the north. AEMET has warned of storms that may be accompanied by hail in areas such as the Cantabrian slope of Navarra, and other forecasts point to the north continuing under a colder, stormier, and more unstable May pattern. This type of episode can complicate traffic in a few minutes.
Spring storms are not always extensive, but they can indeed unload with intensity, reduce visibility, accumulate water on the road, and suddenly leave hail.
The basic recommendation for those who have to travel through the north is to consult updated notices, reduce speed if heavy rain appears, and avoid sudden maneuvers if the road becomes covered in hail.
The Mediterranean recovers heat
The contrast will be provided by the Mediterranean. Maximum temperatures will rise in the Balearic Islands, Alboran, and a large part of the eastern third of the peninsula. The rise will be especially notable in the Valencian Community and Catalonia, where thermometers may gain between 2 and 8 degrees compared to previous days.
The highest values are expected in parts of Castellón, northern Valencia, and southern Catalonia, where the maximums could be close to 25 degrees. It will be a much milder day than in the north, with an atmosphere more typical of May in the Mediterranean areas.
On the contrary side, temperatures will drop in the northwest quadrant, areas of the Iberian Peninsula, the southern plateau, and the west of the Canary Islands. The country is thus divided between the thermal rebound in the east and the cooler, more unstable atmosphere in the north and west.
Canary Islands will also have instability
Canary Islands are not completely left out. In the archipelago, occasional rainfall is expected on the islands with higher relief, especially in mountainous areas. Banks of fog may also appear in elevated areas and depressions of the northeast peninsula.
In the Peninsula, the snowline will be around 1,700-1,200 meters in the main mountain ranges, so snow at high altitudes in the north is not ruled out.
South wind and strong gusts
The wind will also be a protagonist. It will blow from the south in a large part of the peninsular territory, with moderate intensity and strong intervals. The most intense gusts could be registered in areas of the Galician coast and the southeastern peninsula.
In the Strait, Alborán and Balearics, west wind will prevail, also with strong intervals in the Balearic archipelago. In the Canary Islands, the wind will be weaker and variable, with a predominance of the north component.
How the weather will be this Sunday
The day leaves three keys. First: the north will remain under surveillance for rain, storms, and possible hail. Second: the Mediterranean will recover milder temperatures, with highs close to 25 degrees in some areas. Third: instability does not disappear, but it is distributed very unevenly.
