Just one day after presiding over his first Council of Ministers, due to the trip to China that keeps the President of the Government of Spain absent, the First Vice President of the Government, Carlos Cuerpo, embarks this Wednesday on a flight to the United States to inaugurate a new commercial office in this country.

It will be his fourth visit to the United States in a period of just over two years, which reflects -sources from the first vice-presidency point out- the sustained commitment of the Government of Spain to strengthen the strategic link with its main investment partner, at a particularly complicated moment, given the confrontation between the Spanish administration and the North American administration, presided over by Donald Trump, as a consequence of the positioning regarding the Middle East conflict.

Despite this, the First Vice-President of the Government and Minister of Economy, Trade and Business, Carlos Cuerpo, embarks tomorrow on an official trip to Boston, with the aim of strengthening economic and commercial ties with the United States, since the Government plans to open a new commercial office in this city, which would be the eighth that Spain has in the United States.

Before departing on a trip, the vice president will participate virtually in the inauguration of a business meeting with executives from Spanish and American companies organized by ICEX, in which the Governor of Massachusetts, Maura Healey, and the Mayor of Boston, Michelle Wu, will participate.

Breakfast with investors

Already in person in Boston, on Wednesday, Carlos Cuerpo will hold a working breakfast with investors from strategic sectors, such as the chemical industry, robotics, neurotechnology, optical technology, industrial equipment and technological solutions, with an interest in expanding in Spain.

Likewise, will meet with the governor of Massachusetts to explore collaboration opportunities in a state that has become a priority destination for the internationalization of Spanish companies and for the attraction of American investment towards Spain.

Leading Spanish companies in sectors such as energy, financial services, insurance, and life sciences already have an active presence in Massachusetts, which maintains a commercial flow with Spain of around 800 million dollars a year.

The vice president will conclude his day with a public talk at MIT alongside Professor Daron Acemoglu, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2024, on the economic challenges of Europe and the world.

This agenda is in line with the foreign projection policy of the Spanish economy and with the maintenance of high-level institutional relations with the country's main international partners. The visit is also part of the Executive's efforts to diversify and consolidate foreign markets for Spanish companies, especially at a time of transformation in international trade.

Assemblies of the IMF and World Bank

Subsequently, on Thursday, the vice president will travel to Washington to represent Spain at the Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, which are held this week in the U.S. capital.

The vice president on Thursday will participate in a public panel alongside Isabel Schnabel, member of the executive committee of the European Central Bank, on the future of the economic architecture of the euro zone. In the panel, organized by the Peterson Institute, economists Angel Ubide and Olivier Blanchard will also participate.

At the spring meetings, Carlos Cuerpo will join the debates on the evolution of the world economy, global growth prospects, and the main challenges faced by advanced and emerging economies.

Spain will defend in these forums its position in favor of a solid international economic governance, the strengthening of multilateralism and global financial stability.
