The political groups of the European Parliament have expressed this Thursday their "full solidarity" with Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and have denounced the campaign of "intimidation and disinformation" that Russia has launched against the Baltic States, stressing that the security of these community partners is "the security of the European Union as a whole".
"No EU Member State can be threatened, intimidated or subjected to coercive pressures by Russia. The security of the Baltic States is the security of the European Union as a whole," states the declaration agreed by the Conference of Presidents of the Eurochamber, in which all political groups and the president of the institution, Roberta Metsola, are represented.
With this text, the MEPs respond to messages disseminated from Moscow in which it is stated that the Baltic countries would be preparing hostile actions against Russia or allowing the use of their territory, airspace or military facilities to carry out attacks against this country.
"These accusations are part of a broader pattern of intimidation, disinformation and provocation directed against EU Member States," the political formations maintain in the joint statement.
The groups also warn that this verbal escalation is "especially serious" in view of the repeated incursions of unidentified drones into the airspace and territory of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. "Such actions are unacceptable and contribute to increasing tensions and instability in the region," they point out.
In this scenario, the MEPs expect the European Union, in close cooperation with NATO, to continue supporting the three Baltic States in the "strengthening of airspace surveillance, anti-drone means and situation analysis, as well as in reinforcing their capacity to prevent and respond to new incursions".
Likewise, they insist on the importance of the community bloc strengthening its tools and better coordinating its efforts to curb the spread of hoaxes and other forms of disinformation that "threaten European democracy and security".
"The European Union must remain united, vigilant and resolute in the face of Russian attempts to destabilize its environment, undermine European security and divide Member States," concludes the Eurochamber's declaration.
