The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has assured in an interview with Fox News that the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, has shown willingness to collaborate in the search for a diplomatic solution to the conflict with Iran.
According to Trump, Xi conveyed to him during their meeting in Beijing that "he wants a deal" and that he is willing to "help" in managing the conflict in the Middle East. The US president also stated that his Chinese counterpart does not plan to supply military material to Iran and that he shares the interest in avoiding an escalation in the region.
China warns the US about Taiwan
On the other hand, the president of China has warned Trump that the issue of Taiwan could become a serious point of tension if not handled with caution.
Xi pointed out that "Taiwan's independence", one of the points to be discussed at the China summit, and "peace in the strait" are "incompatible" concepts and stated that, if Washington and Beijing do not manage this matter properly, "friction and even conflicts will arise", which could lead the bilateral relationship to a "very dangerous" situation.
The Chinese leader stressed that Taiwan constitutes "the most important issue in the relations between the two countries", insisting that his position is firm, although he has opened the door to dialogue by stating that regional stability is a shared objective.
In this regard, Xi emphasized that "maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is the greatest common denominator between China and the United States", highlighting the need for cooperation despite strategic differences.
During the meeting, the Chinese leader argued that the relationship between the two powers must be based on cooperation and not confrontation, stating that "they must be partners, not adversaries", and that dialogue on equal terms is the appropriate way to manage tensions.
Xi also framed the economic relations between the two countries as an area of mutual interest, pointing out that "there are no winners" in an escalation of trade tensions and that cooperation remains key to global stability.
