The Government of the United Arab Emirates has accused Iran this Monday of attacking a tanker flying the Emirati flag in the Strait of Hormuz, in a new episode of tension in one of the world's most sensitive energy routes.

According to the statement from the Emirati Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the attack was allegedly carried out by drones against a vessel operated by the company ADNOC.

Abu Dhabi has condemned the incident and has demanded the immediate cessation of these types of actions, as well as the guarantee of freedom of navigation in the strait.

An attack without victims but with political impact

ADNOC itself has indicated that the tanker was empty at the time of the attack, so no victims or personal injuries have been recorded. However, the incident has raised diplomatic tension in the region.

The Emirati Government has insisted on the need for "unprovoked attacks" to cease and has called for the full and unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to guarantee the stability of international trade and energy markets.

In its statement, the Emirati government has affirmed that this attack constitutes a flagrant violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2817, which underscores freedom of navigation and rejects the threat or attack on commercial vessels or the disruption of international shipping routes.

For the moment, Iran has not officially confirmed or denied the accusation from the United Arab Emirates. The incident adds to a series of recent episodes that have increased pressure in the Persian Gulf and have reactivated concerns about maritime security in the area.
