The president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, has rejected that the cruise ship with hantavirus docks in the archipelago and has requested an "urgent meeting" with the head of the Executive, Pedro Sánchez. He considers that the decision, adopted by the central government, does not respond to "any technical criterion" nor does it have "sufficient information to maintain a message of calm and guarantee the safety of the Canary population".

In an interview on 'Onda Cero', reported by Europa Press, Clavijo has lashed out at the Government of Spain for its "institutional disloyalty" and for the lack of professionalism in not keeping him informed of the situation. Likewise, he has criticized the Minister of Health, Mónica García, for not providing him with details about the criteria followed by the World Health Organization (WHO). "I cannot allow it to enter the Canary Islands", he reiterated.

Spain had agreed, at the behest of the WHO and the European Union, for the cruise ship to call at the Canary Islands in order to organize healthcare for passengers and crew, following a strict international protocol.
