The hemicycle of the Congress experienced yesterday an episode of tension when the Vox deputy José María Sánchez García went up to the rostrum and confronted Alfonso Rodríguez Gómez de Celis, first vice-president of the Bureau.

The socialist leader was at that moment acting as interim Speaker of the House and after calling to order on several occasions the parliamentarian from Vox, ordered his expulsion from the Plenary.

From Seville to Congress

Gómez de Celis landed in the Carrera de San Jerónimo in 2019, in the failed XIII Legislature, but was back on the lists in the repeat election and has since maintained the seat. His arrival in national politics was preceded by a long career in the municipal and autonomous spheres.

Degree holder in Labor Sciences and graduate in Law, he is a member of the PSOE since his youth, and also has experience as a tax and labor advisor.

He has developed a good part of his career in Andalusia, where he was a councilor in the Seville City Council and later deputy mayor and spokesperson for the municipal government. Later he made the leap to the autonomous sphere as a deputy in the Andalusian Parliament and held various positions of responsibility in the Junta de Andalucía.

After the motion of no confidence against Mariano Rajoy and the arrival of Pedro Sánchez to La Moncloa, he was appointed of the Government in Andalusia between 2018 and 2019.

Institutional profile

In Congress, Gómez de Celis has always held institutional profiles. In the Bureau of the XIII and XIV Legislatures, he was elected second vice-president, complementing Meritxell Batet in the Plenary's governing body.

Currently, he is first vice-president, and right hand of the President of Congress, and also socialist, Francina Armengol.

Organic weight

In addition to his institutional role, Gómez de Celis maintains organic influence within the PSOE, where he has held responsibilities in the federal executive and in the Andalusian structure. He was elected a member of the PSOE Federal Committee by the 38th Federal Congress. In 2017, he was elected secretary of Institutional Relations and Public Administrations of the PSOE. And in the last conclave, he was appointed secretary of Municipal Policy.
