A magnitude 3.6 earthquake was recorded this Thursday night in the province of Almería, with the epicenter in the vicinity of the municipality of Antas, according to data from the National Geographic Institute (IGN).
The seismic movement occurred at 8:53 PM, according to the records released after the earthquake, and had an approximate depth of 10 kilometers. The tremor was felt in various points of the Almerian Levante, although at the moment there is no record of personal or material damage.
The IGN keeps its seismic activity record active to monitor the evolution of the movements detected in the area. The agency reminds that the initial data of an earthquake can be revised later as new measurements from the National Seismic Network are incorporated.
An earthquake located in the Levante of Almería
The epicenter was located near Antas, a municipality situated in the Levante of the province of Almería and close to towns like Vera, Garrucha, Cuevas del Almanzora, and Huércal-Overa.
The magnitude of 3.6 corresponds to an earthquake of moderate intensity that can be perceived by the population, especially in the towns closest to the epicenter, although it does not imply by itself that damage will occur.
The southeast of Spain is one of the areas with the highest seismic activity in the country due to its geological situation and the interaction between the African and Eurasian tectonic plates.

The earthquake recorded now occurs in a province that has experienced numerous seismic movements in recent years. The IGN itself records in its history several earthquakes of magnitude greater than 3 in different points of Almería.
The seismic activity of the province was particularly evident in July 2025, when a magnitude 5.3 Mw earthquake with an epicenter in the sea, about 30 kilometers southeast of the Almerian coast, was felt in hundreds of municipalities in the southeastern peninsula. According to the IGN report, that earthquake was the largest magnitude recorded instrumentally on the coast of Almería.
The agency subsequently counted 73 aftershocks, although there was no record of significant damage directly caused by the main earthquake. The maximum intensity observed was IV on the EMS-98 scale in different localities of Almería and Murcia.
Have there been any damages from the earthquake?
For the moment, there is no record of personal or material damages associated with the earthquake registered in Antas.
The magnitude of the earthquake and its depth are determining factors to know how a seismic movement can be perceived on the surface. The effects also depend on the distance from the epicenter and the characteristics of the terrain and constructions.
The episode is now under monitoring by the National Seismic Network to check if new movements occur in the coming hours. The appearance of small subsequent earthquakes does not necessarily mean that a larger magnitude earthquake will occur, as seismic activity can present normal variations after a movement.
A territory accustomed to earthquakes
The province of Almería is part of one of the seismically most active areas of Spain. The IGN reminds in its reports on the activity of the area that the southeastern peninsula has historically suffered earthquakes of high intensity.
Among the historical episodes are the earthquakes of Vera in 1518, Alhama de Almería in 1522, and the seismic series of Dalías in 1804, all of them with estimated historical intensities of VIII-IX.
The movement registered now in Antas is, however, very far from those great historical earthquakes in terms of magnitude. It is a moderate earthquake, which can be felt in nearby populations but does not by itself imply a scenario of widespread damage.
