The bankruptcy proceedings registered in Spain between January and July 2026 have amounted to 3,984, which represents a decline of 4% compared to the same period of the previous year. In parallel, the dissolutions of companies have grown by 12% year-on-year, reaching 19,534 processes, according to figures released by Informa D&B, a subsidiary of Cesce.

Of the total bankruptcy files processed in the first seven months of the year, 74% correspond to creditor bankruptcies (2,943, a 2.5% decrease), 23% to special procedures for microenterprises (913, a 7% decrease), and the remaining 3% to restructuring plans (128, a 25% decrease).

In this regard, the Director of Studies at Informa D&B, Nathalie Gianese, has highlighted that "in July, bankruptcy proceedings are again above 600, with 602 processes, while in the accumulated year, the year-on-year decline remains at 4%, leaving it at 3,984."

If we analyze only the month of July, 602 bankruptcy proceedings have been counted, 1% more than in July 2025. In detail, creditor bankruptcies have increased by 11% both year-on-year and compared to June, reaching 448; restructuring plans have reached 10 (150% more than in June, but 74% less than a year earlier) and special procedures for microenterprises have risen to 144 (+22% monthly and -8% year-on-year).

Regarding dissolutions, 2,098 processes have been recorded in July, 4% less than in June, although still 16% above the figure for July 2025. Despite the year-on-year increase, this is the lowest monthly figure since September 2025.

Regarding the socioeconomic impact of July, bankruptcy proceedings have affected 5,975 employees and companies with an aggregate turnover of 834 million euros. In the case of the dissolved companies, 11,445 workers have been involved and a combined sales volume of 1,834 million euros.

Commerce accumulates more bankruptcies in 2026

In the accumulated year, bankruptcies are reduced in most major sectors. The most pronounced declines occur in Construction and real estate activities, which account for 68 fewer files, and in Commerce, with 52 less.

In the opposite sense, the most significant increases are located in Hospitality, which adds 29 additional bankruptcies, and in Communications, with 25 more. Despite the cut, Commerce remains the sector with the highest number of bankruptcies since January, with 683 processes, 23% of the total, ahead of Construction and real estate activities, with 526, and Industry, with 422, which represent 18% and 14%, respectively.

Regarding the accumulated dissolutions until July, Construction and real estate activities leads the ranking with 4,837 processes (+11%), followed by Commerce, with 3,766 (+14%), and Business services, with 3,010 (+6%). Agriculture is the only sector that reduces its figures, with a decrease of 22%.

Catalonia, at the forefront of bankruptcies; Madrid leads dissolutions

By autonomous communities, Catalonia is at the top in accumulated bankruptcies, with 895 files (-6%), followed by the Community of Madrid, with 442 (+4%), and the Community of Valencia, with 376 (-5%). Catalonia also leads the restructuring plans, with 26, while Madrid ranks first in special procedures for microenterprises, concentrating 379 cases, 42% of the national total.

If the three modalities of bankruptcy procedures are added together, Catalonia (1,020) and Madrid (838) jointly account for 47% of all processes registered in Spain. In terms of dissolutions, Madrid leads the ranking so far in 2026, with 5,111 processes (+10%), ahead of Andalusia, with 3,206 (+17%), and the Community of Valencia, with 2,308 (+18%).
