Andalusia votes this Sunday, May 17, in decisive regional elections to choose the new Andalusian Parliament. The day officially begins with the opening of polling stations at 9:00 AM and will continue until 8:00 PM, at which time the polls will close and the count will begin. The Junta includes in its official guide that voting takes place from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, although members of the polling stations must arrive earlier to constitute them and review electoral material.

The day will have several key moments before the results are known. The Junta de Andalucía will offer three official participation updates during the day: at 11:30 AM, at 2:00 PM, and at 6:00 PM, with subsequent press conferences to explain the data. The closing of polling stations will occur at 8:00 PM and, from that moment on, the monitoring of the provisional count will be activated.

At what time do polling stations open in Andalusia

Polling stations open at 9:00 AM. From that moment on, the president of each polling station announces the start of voting, and voters can cast their ballot in the corresponding ballot box. Polling stations will remain open for eleven hours, from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

Before voting begins, the day is already underway for the members of the polling stations. The Junta details that at 8:00 AM, presidents, members, and alternates must meet at the polling station, and at 8:30 AM, the minutes for the constitution of the polling station are drawn up.

This prior margin serves to check ballot boxes, voting booths, envelopes, ballots, minutes, census, and credentials of poll watchers. If a polling station cannot be constituted, the procedure is activated before the Electoral Board of the Zone. If a polling station still cannot be formed by 10:00 AM, the Electoral Board may call for a new vote at that polling station within the following two days.

At what time do polling stations close

Polling stations close at 8:00 PM, unless there has been an interruption during the day that requires extending the voting period. The Junta explains that at that time, the president of the polling station announces the end of voting. If there is still someone inside the polling station, that person will be allowed to vote; afterwards, no new voters will be allowed to enter to vote.

The vote may be extended if it has been interrupted for justified reasons, for example due to a lack of ballots for a certain candidacy. In that case, the interruption time is added to the closing time. If the interruption exceeds one hour or prevents the development of the vote, the presidency may suspend it after consulting with the Zonal Electoral Board.

After closing, the members of the polling station and the poll watchers vote, and mail-in votes are placed in the ballot box following the established procedure. From there, the counting of ballots begins, which is public and cannot be suspended until all votes have been counted.

What document to bring to vote

To vote, you must identify yourself at the polling station with an original document with a photograph. The Junta de Andalucía indicates that a DNI, passport, or driver's license can be used. It does not matter if they are expired, but they must be originals: photocopies or the receipt for a DNI in process are not valid, as they do not include a photograph.

It is not necessary to bring the census card to vote, although it can help the voter locate their polling station, section, and table. The essential thing is to be included in the census for that table and to prove your identity to its members.

Key participation times this 17M

The first institutional appearance of the day is scheduled for 10:30 AM, to report on the opening of polling stations, the constitution of the polling stations, and any possible incidents at the start of the day. From then on, attention will focus on participation data.

The first participation update will be taken at 11:30 AM and communicated at a press conference at 12:00 PM. The second figure will be at 2:00 PM, with a press conference at 2:30 PM. The third update will arrive at 6:00 PM and will be explained at 6:30 PM.

These figures will be one of the first political signals of the day. Low participation may favor more mobilized electorates, while higher participation may alter the balance between blocs before the scrutiny.

When do the Andalusian election results come out

The provisional results can be followed from 8:00 PM, when the polling stations close and the count begins. The Board has enabled an official results website and the mobile application “17M Elecciones Andalucía 2026”, which will allow consultation of participation, constitution of polling stations, count, results by territories, maps, and comparisons with 2022. They can also be consulted here on Demócrata.

From 8:00 PM, press conferences may be held at the Data Dissemination Center to report on the progress of the count, which will be updated progressively until a provisional picture of the new Andalusian Parliament is provided.

What to watch during election day

The morning will be marked by the opening of polling stations, the normality in the constitution of polling stations, and the first votes of the candidates. At midday, the participation data at 2:00 PM will serve as the first serious thermometer. In the afternoon, the update at 6:00 PM will be an even more important signal to measure whether mobilization is growing or cooling down.

From 8:00 PM, the key will be the distribution of seats. An absolute majority is 55 deputies, and the focus will be on whether Juanma Moreno manages to govern alone or if he needs Vox. We will also have to look at the resistance of María Jesús Montero's PSOE-A, the weight of Vox, the struggle between Por Andalucía and Adelante Andalucía, and the last seats in provinces such as Cádiz, Córdoba, Málaga, Granada, and Seville.

Demócrata will follow the entire 17M election day live, with the opening of polling stations, participation, results, maps, the last seat, and analysis of possible government scenarios.
