The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia expressed this Saturday its support for the statement approved the day before by the members of the UN Security Council, in which the missile attacks against Saudi territory attributed to the Houthi rebels of Yemen are condemned, as well as the actions directed against commercial ships in the area.
Riyadh emphasized that the pronouncement of the Security Council reaffirms the obligation to comply with International Law and the resolutions adopted within the framework of the United Nations in general and, specifically, Resolution 2216, which demands the Houthis --among other points-- to end their military operations.
According to Saudi authorities, these provisions are essential to safeguard the sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity of Yemen.
The Saudi government also stressed the need to reject any conduct that may destabilize the region or compromise the freedom and security of maritime navigation, in a context marked by the increase of incidents affecting commercial traffic in these waters.
In this line, Riyadh called on the international community to assume its responsibilities and to ensure the implementation of the relevant resolutions of the Security Council.
Saudi authorities also demanded a strong response to actions that, in their view, not only endanger regional security and international trade but also hinder diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a negotiated solution to the conflict in Yemen.
Saudi Arabia reiterated in the same note that it will remain committed to the defense of its territory and its sovereignty, claiming the country's right to take the necessary measures to protect its citizens, its resources, and its facilities against possible attacks, always within the framework of International Law.
At the same time, Saudi authorities renewed their support for the Yemeni government recognized by the international community, as well as for the work of the Secretary-General's special envoy for the country.
In this context, Riyadh believes that diplomatic efforts should be directed towards a solution that consolidates peace and stability in Yemen and that, in parallel, strengthens security throughout the region and ensures the continuity of maritime traffic.
The Saudi statement comes just one day after the Security Council made public its condemnation of the missile attacks against Saudi Arabia recorded since July 13 and the actions against commercial vessels reported since the 22nd of the same month.
