Scratching of a group of "Gandalfs" in front of Peter Thiel's house in Buenos Aires for Palantir and its investment in Vaca Muerta

A group of protesters disguised as Gandalf staged a striking protest in front of Peter Thiel's mansion in Buenos Aires. The protest against the co-founder of Palantir was motivated by his growing presence in Argentina, his relationship with Javier Milei, and the investment of 76 million dollars made by his fund in Vista Energy, one of the main companies operating in Vaca Muerta.

A protest against Peter Thiel has gone viral due to a staging inspired by The Lord of the Rings. Around a dozen people dressed as Gandalf gathered on Monday, August 17, in front of the house that the American billionaire has bought in Barrio Parque, one of the most exclusive areas of Buenos Aires.

With gray robes, pointed hats, and white beards, the protesters unfurled a large banner with the phrase "You shall not pass," translated into Spanish as "No pasarás". They also jumped and chanted slogans against Thiel, playing with the name of Palantir, the tech company that the businessman founded along with Alex Karp and other partners.

The images of the protest spread rapidly on social media and have turned the so-called "Gandalfs of the South" or "Ciudadan@s Gandalf" into protagonists of a political action directed against Thiel's arrival in Argentina.

Their impact has been much greater on the internet than its dimension on the ground.

Why the "Gandalfs" protested in front of Peter Thiel's house

The immediate reason for the protest was the growing economic landing of Peter Thiel in Argentina, especially in the energy sector. Thiel Macro LLC, the investment fund linked to the businessman, has acquired nearly 1.2 million American Depositary Shares —ADS— of Vista Energy. The position is valued at approximately 76 million dollars and amounts to around 1% of the company's capital, according to the documentation submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission —SEC—.

Vista Energy is one of the main oil companies present in Vaca Muerta, the large Argentine formation of unconventional hydrocarbons located mainly in the province of Neuquén. The company produces around 160,000 barrels of oil equivalent daily and has accumulated investments exceeding 6.5 billion dollars in the country.

The operation has placed Vista as one of the main investments in the portfolio declared by Thiel Macro, only behind Amazon. The fund also holds positions in several U.S. energy companies.

The protesters believe that Thiel's entry into Vista Energy increases the influence of U.S. technological capital over Argentine strategic resources. This is a political assessment of the collective, not a legal consequence derived from the acquisition, which represents a minority stake of 1%.

What does Gandalf have to do with Peter Thiel and Palantir

The choice of Gandalf as a symbol of the protest against Peter Thiel is not casual. The businessman is a known admirer of J. R. R. Tolkien's work and has used different names from the universe of The Lord of the Rings to name his businesses.

Palantir Technologies takes its name from the "palantíri," seeing stones that allow observing events that occurred in distant places and communicating at a distance. In Tolkien's story, these objects can also be used to spy, deceive, or manipulate those who look through them.

The reference fits with Palantir's activity, specialized in processing and analyzing large volumes of information. Their programs are used by public administrations, intelligence services, armed forces, police, and large companies.

Critics of the company question the implications that its systems may have for privacy, population surveillance, and data control. Palantir defends, for its part, that its technology allows integrating dispersed information and improving decision-making in areas such as defense, security, health, or industry.

The protesters took advantage of this connection to launch against Thiel one of Gandalf's most recognizable phrases: "You shall not pass". During the protest, they also sang: "You have palantíri to see the future, look at yourself in the mirror, you will see a fool."

Thiel's business symbolism does not end with Palantir. The magnate is also linked to Mithril Capital, whose name comes from the fictional metal created by Tolkien, and to Valar Ventures, a name inspired by the powerful beings of Middle-earth mythology.

Who are the "Gandalfs of the South"

The exact identity of the organizers of the protest has not been clarified. Some publications identify them as "Ciudadan@s Gandalf" and link their action with the slogan "They shall not pass," but so far, no spokesperson has been known nor has a manifesto signed by the collective been publicly disseminated.

The participants used costumes not only as a humorous resource but also to protect their identity. The action was directed against the influence they attribute to Peter Thiel and other American technology entrepreneurs over strategic sectors of Argentina.

After concentrating in front of the businessman’s mansion, the protesters coincided with the passage of the Horse Grenadiers Regiment along Figueroa Alcorta Avenue, which was participating in the events for the anniversary of the death of General José de San Martín. The "Gandalfs" momentarily interrupted their chants and applauded the military.

Where is Peter Thiel's house in Buenos Aires

Peter Thiel has purchased a mansion in Barrio Parque, within the area of Palermo Chico, one of the most exclusive residential enclaves in Buenos Aires. The area houses luxury homes, palaces, diplomatic residences, and embassies.

Argentine and American media place the amount of the real estate transaction at about 12 million dollars. The property would have six bedrooms and was originally designed with a French academic style façade.

Thiel temporarily moved to Buenos Aires with his family and enrolled his children in a private school in the city, according to the Financial Times. The stay was initially planned for approximately three months.

The billionaire also reportedly acquired land near Punta del Este, in Uruguay, where he plans to build another residence.

The relationship between Peter Thiel and Javier Milei

Peter Thiel's arrival in Argentina also has a political dimension. The co-founder of Palantir met in April with President Javier Milei at the Casa Rosada.

After that meeting, Milei explained that they had talked about economic policy and their rejection of taxes that burden wealth. Thiel shares with the Argentine president a favorable view of deregulation, reducing the state, and decreasing tax pressure.

During his stay in Buenos Aires, the businessman has also attended a superclásico between Boca Juniors and River Plate and participated in a chess tournament organized by a local club.

His presence has been interpreted by the Argentine Government as a demonstration of the interest that Milei's policies awaken among certain international investors. For his detractors, on the other hand, it represents a warning about the growing influence of large foreign fortunes in the economy and in strategic sectors of the country.

Who is Peter Thiel

Peter Thiel is a businessman and technology investor born in Germany and naturalized as an American and New Zealander. He is known for having co-founded PayPal and Palantir Technologies, in addition to promoting the venture capital fund Founders Fund.

He was also one of the first external investors in Facebook. In 2004, he contributed around 500,000 dollars to the then-nascent social network in exchange for a stake that later provided him with significant benefits.

Thiel is one of the most influential and controversial figures in Silicon Valley. In addition to his technology investments, he has financed conservative candidates and movements in the United States. For years, he maintained a close relationship with JD Vance, the current U.S. Vice President, who worked at a firm linked to the billionaire's business environment.

Palantir was founded in 2003 and has become one of the leading global companies in data analysis and intelligence applied to security and defense. Thiel continues as the chairman of the company, although its CEO is Alex Karp.

What is Palantir and why does it generate controversy

Palantir Technologies develops platforms capable of crossing, organizing, and analyzing enormous amounts of information from different sources. Its main products are used in military operations, police investigations, border control, fraud detection, and business management.

Among its clients are agencies of the U.S. Government and various departments of Defense and security. The company has gained weight in recent years thanks to the increase in military spending, the development of artificial intelligence, and the need to process data in real time.

The company also carries controversies due to its participation in surveillance and immigration control programs. Civil rights defense organizations have warned that these tools can facilitate mass tracking or automated decisions with little transparency.

This debate explains why the protesters chose precisely the figures of Gandalf and the palantíri to protest against Thiel: they turned the billionaire's business mythology into a visual critique against surveillance and the concentration of technological power.

Peter Thiel's investment in Vaca Muerta

Thiel Macro's entry into Vista Energy represents the first major public bet of the investor in the Argentine energy sector. The fund acquired approximately 1,189,792 ADS of the oil company, valued at about 76 million dollars at the close of the second quarter of 2026.

The stake is approximately equivalent to 1% of Vista's capital. Although it does not grant Thiel control of the company, it does evidence his interest in Argentine energy and the economic potential of Vaca Muerta.

This formation houses the second largest shale gas reserve in the world and the fourth of unconventional oil, according to estimates commonly cited by the Argentine Government. Its exploitation is one of the country's major economic bets to increase exports, attract investment, and obtain foreign currency.

The combination of buying a mansion, meeting with Milei, and investing in Vista Energy has fueled the perception that Thiel intends to maintain a stable presence in Argentina. This accumulation of movements was the context chosen by the "Gandalfs" to bring their protest to the door of his new home.
