The Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Jasem Mohamed Al Budaiwi, warned this Wednesday that Iran's actions are undermining the efforts of the international community to establish stability, and urged the UN Security Council to intervene to stop the attacks launched by Tehran in the Middle East.
"We reiterate our call to the international community and in particular to the Council, to fulfill its responsibilities, putting an end to these attacks and deterring Iran from continuing its aggressive policies, so that international peace and security are preserved and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the States are safeguarded," he indicated before the UN Security Council.
The top official of the GCC emphasized that Tehran's stance is "unacceptable" and "incompatible with the United Nations Charter." "Since February 28, Iran has continued launching ballistic missile and drone attacks against GCC member States and other countries, without any legal justification," he argued.
In the same vein, he pointed out that these offensives "continue" to this day and "represent a serious danger to the GCC member States, as well as to regional and international peace and security." "These attacks not only target the attacked countries, but also constitute a pattern of behavior that ultimately harms the international community," he noted.
Al Budaiwi added that the aggressions against vessels and the blockade in the strategic Strait of Hormuz "constitute a clear violation of International Law and undermine confidence in the security of one of the most important maritime routes in the world."
He also indicated that "they have caused loss of human lives and humanitarian suffering, affecting more than 20,000 sailors of various nationalities." "They have had a direct impact on international trade and global supply chains," he emphasized.
On the other hand, the Secretary General also condemned the recent "hostile statements" from the Houthi rebels of Yemen against Saudi Arabia after he accused the group the day before of exacerbating the situation of the Yemeni people and threatening the security and stability of the region, where he announced a blockade in the Bab el Mandeb Strait.
