Far from being an exceptional phenomenon, the Colombian Geological Service (SGC) counts on average around 2,500 earthquakes per month, about 80 daily, although the vast majority are so small that they can only be detected by measuring instruments.

Tectonic plates are enormous fragments of the Earth's outer part that move slowly. When these movements cause the accumulation and subsequent release of energy, earthquakes occur.

In Colombia, one of the fundamental dynamics is found in the Pacific. There, the Nazca plate converges and subducts beneath the South American plate, a process known as subduction that explains a significant part of the seismic activity in the west of the country. This interaction is also related to the formation of the Pacific trench and the volcanic chain of the Andes.

To the north, the Caribbean plate comes into play, whose interaction with South America adds even more complexity to Colombian tectonics. This is joined by blocks such as Panama-Chocó and the Norandino, as well as the deformation that is transmitted into the interior of the continent.

Therefore, earthquakes do not concentrate in a single point in Colombia, but can originate in different areas and at different depths.

This complex combination of plate subduction and continental faults helps explain why a good part of Colombian territory is exposed to seismic threat.

The Pacific, one of the key areas

The Pacific coastline is of special importance. The SGC indicates that a significant part of Colombian seismicity is concentrated there precisely due to the subduction of the Nazca plate beneath the South American.

It is not a new phenomenon. In May 2026, after another earthquake of magnitude 5.6 recorded in Chocó, the agency explained again that in this region the Nazca and South American plates converge and that this tectonic dynamic generates seismic activity.

The National Seismic Threat Model precisely identifies the Pacific coast among the areas where particularly intense movements can occur, along with the Llanero Border and areas of Arauca, Santander, and Norte de Santander.

The Seismic Nest of Bucaramanga

Colombia also has one of its great geological singularities: the so-called Seismic Nest of Bucaramanga, located under the municipality of Los Santos, in Santander.

According to the Colombian Geological Service, between 40% and 50% of the seismic activity recorded in the country occurs in this area.

Its high frequency means that Santander appears repeatedly in the country's earthquake records, although many of those movements are not perceived by the population.

Is it shaking more now than before in Colombia?

That citizens constantly receive information about new earthquakes does not necessarily mean that seismic activity has increased.

The Colombian Geological Service has expressly warned about this perception. The development of seismic networks, the improvement of monitoring, and the practically immediate dissemination of each event through the internet and social networks allow us to know today about movements that previously could go unnoticed.

The SGC monitors Colombian seismic activity 24 hours a day, seven days a week through the National Seismological Network of Colombia. In information published in June 2026, the agency indicated that the network already has more than 200 stations distributed throughout the country.

Therefore, that it shakes frequently in Colombia is not the result of a recent anomaly, but of its own geological configuration. The permanent interaction of tectonic plates, blocks, and faults makes the country one of the seismically active territories in Latin America.
