The Kings Felipe VI and Letizia have sent their "affection" to the family and colleagues of the corporal of the Military Emergency Unit (UME) Javier García Sancho, who lost his life this Sunday while participating in the firefighting efforts of the forest fire declared in Peñas de Riglos, in the province of Huesca.
The Royal House has disseminated the message through its official account on the social network 'X', where it has written: "All our affection for the family and colleagues of the UME Corporal Javier García Sancho, member of the Emergency Intervention Battalion IV (Zaragoza), who died while working on the firefighting efforts of #IFPeñasdeRiglos".
In the same statement, they also expressed their support for the people who were injured during the firefighting operation, conveying their hope that "they recover well and as soon as possible".
Three personnel injured in the incident
Corporal García Sancho, integrated into the Emergency Intervention Battalion IV based in Zaragoza, died this Sunday and three other personnel were injured after a traffic accident recorded in the Barranco de Atarés, near Monte Oroel. In this area, the main efforts of the deployed device against the forest fire of Las Peñas de Riglos were concentrated during the day.
The president of the Government of Aragon, Jorge Azcón, explained that the incident occurred when one of the fire trucks involved in extinguishing the fire had an accident.
For their part, sources from the regional government specified that one of the injured was evacuated to the Miguel Servet Hospital, where he remains "stable and out of danger". The other two personnel were treated at the Jaca Hospital, with minor injuries, according to the information provided this Sunday.
