The president of the Xunta, Alfonso Rueda, has announced that throughout the next month the master plan for the forest-wood sector will be released, a roadmap with which it is intended to reinforce the competitiveness of this strategic activity for Galicia.

Rueda made this announcement during the commemorative event for the 25th anniversary of the Clúster da Madeira e do Deseño de Galicia, which took place this Friday in Santiago de Compostela. In his speech, he highlighted the "fruitful" 25 years of trajectory of this organization and predicted that the next 25 will be "much, much more".

The Galician president also underlined the regional administration's commitment to the use of wood in public construction, setting a goal that 20% of new buildings promoted by the Xunta incorporate this material in their structure.

The head of the regional government argued that "things are being done well" in a sector he considers "fundamental," which is why he insisted that one should not "give in to demagoguery or complacency."

Economic weight of the forest-wood sector in Galicia

The business network linked to the forest-wood chain reaches a turnover close to 2.5 billion euros per year, equivalent to 1.7% of the community's GDP. Likewise, it exceeds 1.2 billion in foreign sales and has a presence in 95% of Galician municipalities, representing 50% of the industrial fabric in several town councils.

Before Rueda's speech, the president of the Cluster, José Manuel Iglesias, reviewed the entity's evolution over these two and a half decades, highlighting the "shared vision" of a project that aims to "project itself into the future."
