Consumer confidence remained in May at 77.7 points, the same level as in April, as a slight improvement in the perception of the present situation was offset by a worsening of expectations about the future, according to data released this Friday by the Center for Sociological Research (CIS).

According to CIS statistics, the component measuring the current situation advances one tenth compared to April, to 72.1 points, while the expectations index falls 0.03 points to 63.4 points.

Compared to May of last year, the Consumer Confidence Index registers a decrease of 5.7% points, driven by a drop of 8.1 points in the assessment of the current situation in the last twelve months and by a decline of 3.6 points in future expectations compared to May 2025.

In the present situation sub-index, the survey shows that the opinion on the general economic situation improves by 1.1 points compared to April, to 55.6 points, and the perception of household situations advances 3.2 points, to 85.6 points in May. In contrast, the assessment of the labor market decreases to 75 points, which is 4 points less than in the previous month.

Within the expectations index, the assessment of the future evolution of the economy reaches 71.3 points, after increasing 0.8 points, and the perception of the future situation of households adds 1.5 points, to 103.1 points. On the contrary, forecasts on the future behavior of the labor market decline 2.4 points and stand at 75.8 points in May.

The ICC is compiled monthly and measures how Spanish consumers assess the recent evolution and prospects of the family economy and employment, in order to anticipate their spending decisions. The indicator ranges between 0 and 200 points; above 100 is interpreted as a positive perception and below, negative.
