The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has announced his intention to confirm the current acting Attorney General, Todd Blanche, as the definitive head of the Department of Justice, thereby stably replacing Pam Bondi, who left the post last April.
"He is serving as interim Attorney General. Tomorrow (Thursday) I will instruct Dan (Scavino, White House Deputy Chief of Staff) and everyone else involved in this very complicated process, which I believe will unfold very quickly, to appoint him as permanent Attorney General," he announced from the White House, according to the video disseminated on social media by Scavino himself.
Blanche, who assumed the position of interim Attorney General after Pam Bondi's departure in early April, has found himself this week at the center of national political debate within the Trump Administration, after stating on Tuesday that the Government will abandon its project to create a $1.7 trillion ($1.4 trillion euros) fund intended to compensate alleged victims of "instrumentalization" of Justice during previous administrations.
The implementation of this fund was included in the settlement agreement reached between the current occupant of the White House and the U.S. Treasury, following the leak to the press of his tax return by a former tax contractor, who is currently in prison.
Despite the announcement, reservations persist within the Democratic ranks regarding the solidity of this decision, as the now head of Justice refused to guarantee in writing that the commitment to halt the fund project would be formalized.
