The former President of the Government, Felipe González, stated this Tuesday that there is an "evident political responsibility" after the sentence against former minister José Luis Ábalos, placing the Executive's response in two possible scenarios: "resign or call elections".
The statements were made at an event held in Toledo on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Federation of Businessmen of Toledo (FEDETO), in which González participated alongside the president of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page, in a context marked by the political debate opened after the judicial resolution.
González calls for a political response of national scope
The former head of the Executive insisted that the political impact of the sentence goes beyond the judicial sphere and demands an institutional reaction. In his speech, he argued that the situation requires a clear exit from the Government, either through the president's resignation or the calling of general elections.
González also stressed the need for political coherence in the face of judicial procedures linked to corruption cases, in a message in which he alluded to the management of the so-called "whistleblowers" in previous processes, insisting on the importance of maintaining homogeneous criteria in this type of case.
In this context, he argued that the content of judicial sentences cannot be relativized or their legitimacy questioned, in reference to the resolution affecting Ábalos and which has been issued by the Supreme Court.
Page demands explanations and calls on the PSOE leadership to provide answers
For his part, Emiliano García-Page has asked for "clarity" within the Socialist Party and has focused on the Federal Committee meeting scheduled for next Saturday, which he considers a key moment to offer internal explanations after months of political debate.
The president of Castilla-La Mancha insisted that citizens have the right to know answers and questioned the absence of a more forceful political reaction during the last year, in reference to the time elapsed since the beginning of the political crisis linked to the case.
Although he avoided specifying what the President of the Government should do, he did demand that the political consequences of the situation be analyzed, recalling that he himself had already raised scenarios such as an eventual early call for elections or a vote of confidence.
