Two weeks after the regional elections of May 17, the Andalusian coordinator of Izquierda Unida (IU) will hold a meeting this Sunday with the federal general coordinator of the organization and candidate of Por Andalucía for the presidency of the Junta, Antonio Maíllo.
As sources from the party have explained to Europa Press, the meeting will serve to examine and evaluate in detail the results obtained by the coalition, as well as to begin to set the main lines of work for the start of the new legislature, scheduled for June 11.
In this stage, the alliance made up of seven parties, including IU, Sumar, and Podemos, will have five seats, the same number as in the previous term, although with a new internal balance of power.
Of those five seats, four correspond to IU, which becomes the predominant force within Por Andalucía. Four years ago, it only had Inma Nieto compared to the three representatives from Podemos. The Sumar parliamentarian, Esperanza Gómez, is the only one repeating and does so again for the province of Cádiz.
Maíllo has ratified that he will occupy his seat in the Andalusian Chamber, combining that work with his functions at the head of the state leadership. In an interview broadcast this week on 7 Televisión, he admitted that he "would have resigned" if the coalition had worsened its results on May 17.
In that same television conversation, the general coordinator acknowledged that he is not satisfied with the electoral data, although he highlighted the importance of preserving the parliamentary group to "make a firm and tough opposition" against Moreno.
Regarding the president of the Junta, Maíllo believes that he "will try to avoid" a shared executive with Vox, although he has expressed his conviction that "there will be a pact" between the two formations, in coherence with what has happened in other autonomous communities.
"People are asking us to do a job and that, whatever we are doing, we have a cohesive parliamentary group, one that works hard with social alliances, with points of struggle and dispute in political debate that are very permanent and constant, and I believe we are in very good conditions to do so," he stressed.
This Wednesday, the candidate of Por Andalucía registered the request for the appearance of the Governing Council of the Board, specifically the acting Minister of Health, Presidency and Emergencies, Antonio Sanz, to give explanations before the Permanent Deputation of the Parliament for the fire declared in the Doñana National Park.
Sumar Assembly on June 13
The meeting of the Andalusian coordinator of IU is held a few days after the meeting of the Coordinating Group of the Sumar Andalucía Movement, in which the elected parliamentarian for Cádiz, Esperanza Gómez, participates. The organization has called an assembly on June 13 with the aim of setting its political orientation in the new legislature and beginning to prepare for the municipal elections of May 2027.
According to a statement released by the party, during that meeting one of the Andalusian coordinators, Raúl Cobos, admitted "clearly that these are not the results we expected" and emphasized that "we have managed to maintain the parliamentary group and revalidate the representation of Movimiento Sumar in the Andalusian Parliament, but we expected greater representation for the coalition."
For their part, Podemos sources have indicated to this agency that in the coming days new meetings and encounters of their internal bodies will be announced after having lost parliamentary presence within the coalition.
The purple party ran with the head of the list for Jaén, Loli Montávez, and the number two for Seville, Alejandra Durán, as their main candidates, although in the end both have been left out of the regional Chamber. In this way, Podemos loses the three seats it had in the previous legislature.
The former spokesperson for the Por Andalucía group in Parliament during the last term, Inma Nieto, has defended the continuity of the coalition currently made up of seven parties. "In the same way that the work has been done in these four years without any problems, that work will continue in the future. I am absolutely convinced of it," she stated a few days ago in an attention with the media.
