The first vice president and Minister of Economy, Carlos Cuerpo, has communicated that Spain will assume the impulse and will be the first host country of the Global Council for a Common Good Economy, an international debate forum destined to "transform the foundations of dominant economic thought" and offer a progressive economic alternative, linked to democracy and the general interest.

The announcement took place this Saturday during his speech on the second day of the Global Progressive Mobilisation (GPM), held at Fira de Barcelona Gran Via, in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat (Barcelona). Cuerpo shared the stage with Mariana Mazzucato, an economist from University College London (UCL), who is also a promoter of this proposal.

In his speech, the vice president has advocated for the need to "talk about the economy in a different way, so as not to always resort to the same solutions when going through a crisis", defending a model of economic growth oriented towards purpose and the common good.

He also underlined the relevance of this new international platform: "It is a pleasure to be part of this club and also to be its host. I am sure that we will have many more academic partners and finance ministers who will want to join. I hope we can make a good contribution to the future."

For his part, Mazzucato has expressed his recognition to Cuerpo for assuming leadership of the project: "We need a new way of thinking about the economy, not with the State always exposed, correcting markets, but shaping and creating value in a completely different way".

First Council Meeting and Roadmap

Cuerpo and Mazzucato will co-chair this Global Council, which will be attended by finance ministers, representatives of civil society organizations, and economists of international prestige, with the aim of articulating a high-level network around the Economy for the Common Good.

The first meeting is scheduled for this summer and will be held in person, in parallel with major international events such as the meetings of the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the COP. The second session of the Council will take place in Madrid in the spring of 2027, thus consolidating Spain's role as a reference venue for this initiative.

The purpose of this Council is to promote a new framework of economic thinking that revolves around more effective public policies, better institutional design, and a profound reform of the multilateral system. All of this will be articulated on the principles of justice, equality, sustainability, and global solidarity, with the intention of reorienting the economy towards the common good and social cohesion.
