The PSC-Units and ERC group has submitted to the Parlament a Sustainable Agricultural Production (PAS) bill, conceived to bolster a more competitive and resilient agriculture and livestock farming, placing environmental, economic, and social sustainability at the center of agricultural activity.
The promoted regulation seeks to strengthen local production and foods made in Catalunya. Agricultural holdings may, if they wish, certify this "commitment" through a public certification based on data and objective criteria, compatible with the certification systems already in force, as detailed by the PSC in a statement released this Tuesday.
The legislative text is the result of "more than 6 years of work" and integrates the experience and vision of more than 4,500 agricultural and livestock holdings that have applied and tested the Sustainable Agricultural Production model in the field.
After the initiative has been registered, the parliamentary processing phase now opens, which is approached with "a willingness to reach consensus and to incorporate contributions that make it possible to improve the proposal" and thus be able to address the diversity of realities that make up the agricultural sector in Catalunya.
According to its promoters, the law is designed to make it easier for holdings to improve their efficiency, competitiveness, and resilience, also from an economic point of view. In addition, it aims to recognize the effort made in the efficient use of water, energy, and other resources, in the protection of soil and biodiversity, as well as in adaptation to climate change.
