The delegate of CCOO of Public Education in Aragón, Andrés Mingueza, assured this Wednesday in the Cortes that "the conditions of teachers are deteriorating and are the worst in Spain". He spoke before the Commission of Citizen Appearances to set out the situation of teachers in Aragonese public education, focusing on salaries and "precarity with a very high rate of temporary positions".

Regarding pay, Mingueza stressed that "we have two hundred euros less on average in salary in Aragón and we are the teachers who earn the least in Spain".

He also warned of the so-called "border effect" with neighboring autonomous communities. In his words, "for example, a teacher from Benasque is going to earn at the end of a year two thousand one hundred euros less than one from Viella", which means that "Aragonese teachers prefer to work on the other side of the border and people from the surrounding areas prefer not to come to Aragón; the result of this are positions left unfilled".

Mingueza underlined that "there is a shortage of teachers in Aragón". He detailed that "in this school year we are starting there are approximately one hundred teachers who do not have the required qualification to be a teacher" and invited reflection on "why there are not enough teachers".

Likewise, he indicated that "40% of Aragonese teachers are temporary", a proportion which, as he recalled, "is five times what we should legally have and if we look at the Spanish average we are at double". In his view, "this is a problem for teachers who every year have to change schools and, even, cities" and he lamented that "it is serious for educational centers and students".

The delegate of CCOO of Public Education in Aragón, Alfonso Alegre, added that "more and more responsibilities are being demanded of us while teachers denounce that they feel increasingly unprotected".

He called for "an assault on a teacher while carrying out his work is a labor and safety problem and requires an institutional response" and censured that "we have the inspectorate dedicating hours to administrative tasks instead of being in the centers, accompanying teachers, advising management teams and contributing to improving education".

Alegre has warned that "when working conditions cease to be attractive, when working in another Autonomous Community offers better prospects and when the inspection accumulates responsibilities without sufficient support, Aragón runs the risk of losing teachers and of having difficulties attracting new generations and retaining talent in our Community". In his view, "it is a problem for the future of Aragón".

Dignify teaching work and reduce temporary employment

From the PP, the deputy María José Vicente has defended that "the dignification of the teacher’s work and the improvement of staffing levels translates into a quantified and real budgetary commitment, it goes from the 1.565 billion of the extended 2026 budget to more than 1.900 billion in the year 2027". Regarding temporary employment, she has highlighted that "the Department of Education has agreed with the trade union organizations on a call for nine hundred positions for teachers in 2027".

For the PSOE, Carmen Soler has maintained that "there is no quality in public education without recognition and job stability for staff" and has added that "thanks to the progressive policies of the Government of Spain, the Government of Aragón is going to have historic amounts, so all your demands can be solved".

The Vox deputy Marta Fernández has pointed out that "the improvement of remuneration and the reduction of temporary employment have been commitments defended by this parliamentary group" and has defended that "we think that teachers should dedicate their time to preparing classes, attending to students and not to filling out more and more paperwork".

On behalf of CHA, Mascún Ariste has considered that "the data you provide are difficult to justify" and has recalled that "in 2022 you already presented a report denouncing this situation and four years later we find ourselves again with a very similar diagnosis".

From Aragón-Teruel Existe, the deputy Pilar Buj has underlined that "it is absolutely necessary and urgent to change the labor and salary reality that teachers are living through" and has reproached that "we have been hearing for three years that thanks to the great measures of this Government you had stopped being the worst-paid teachers, but you still are".
