The PSC and the Comuns have reached a pact to "achieve a progressive majority in the Senate" in the general elections on November 29, which involves the resignation of the candidacy promoted by the candidate of the Front Ample, Ada Colau, in the provinces of Girona, Lleida, and Tarragona.
In a joint statement released this Tuesday, both forces have detailed that the Comuns commit to withdrawing their lists for the Senate in the constituencies of Girona, Lleida, and Tarragona, thus ceding their space to the candidacies of the PSC.
In exchange, the PSC is obliged to appoint a senator at the proposal of the Comuns. This representative of the Comuns will access the Upper Chamber by autonomous designation and will not be part of the electoral lists.
"Democratic responsibility" against the advance of the right
The two formations have claimed that the purpose of the agreement is "to confront the right and the far right" after the pact between PP and Vox to run together in the Senate in the constituencies of Girona and Tarragona.
According to PSC and Comuns, the understanding between those of Alberto Núñez Feijóo and Santiago Abascal "has the objective of controlling this chamber so that it becomes an instrument of democratic regression and control of state institutions."
They also consider that "it is especially serious that the agreement hands over the leadership of Catalan constituencies to Vox, the far right that wants to end the institutions and rights and freedoms of Catalunya, and our self-government," which in their opinion increases the significance of the progressive pact.
For this reason, both forces maintain that there is "a democratic responsibility of the progressive and Catalanist forces to block the way for the right and the far right in the Senate," and frame their agreement within this containment strategy.
