The spokespeople for PP, Más Madrid and Vox in the Assembly of Madrid agreed this Friday, after the Board of Spokespersons, in demanding "responsibilities" from the central Government for the Urda railway accident (Toledo), rejecting that the official version be limited to a possible "human error" by the employee of the control center.
The representative of PP, Carlos Díaz-Pache, has asked for detailed explanations about the situation of the railway infrastructures and about the maintenance and safety protocols applied. In his view, the Urda disaster, together with the one in Adamuz recorded in January and the "blackout" that affected Spain at the end of April 2025, raises serious doubts about the management of the services and of the public facilities.
"What is happening with the infrastructures in Spain?", Díaz-Pache has asked himself, and he has called for knowing what prior warnings the Executive received, what conservation work was carried out on the track and what extraordinary measures were put into action. He has insisted that "political responsibilities" must be assumed before the "judicial" ones are clarified.
From Más Madrid, Manuela Bergerot has maintained that, even if a human failure is confirmed, the focus must be placed on the overall functioning of the railway system. "If a human failure can end in a fatal accident, what is failing is the system," she has emphasized, pointing to those who make decisions about the design, maintenance and supervision of the network.
Bergerot has requested a thorough review of safety protocols and an independent audit to clarify the causes of the disaster. She has also associated the increase in risks with the increase in railway traffic and the emergence of new foreign operators "that have contributed practically nothing", together with the lack of sufficient investment to modernize the infrastructures and protection systems.
In this line, she has defended an emergency plan of investment and staff reinforcement that guarantees the operation of the entire network, denouncing that underfunding and the privatization of management services respond to a long-standing trend in time in which, in her view, PP and PSOE share responsibilities.
The spokesperson of Vox, Isabel Pérez Moñino, has ruled out that what happened can be explained by a simple human error or a technical problem and has hardened her criticism of the Executive. "This is not a human error, this is not even a technical error, it is a crime," she declared, accusing the Government of "pointing" immediately to "a worker as responsible for its management".
Moñino has warned that her party is not going to remain silent in the face of what happened and has directly held the president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, responsible, whom she has accused of leading a "criminal organization". She has also broadened her reproaches to the Executive's actions in areas such as immigration, Health, Education and Security.
The railway accident in Urda, in the province of Toledo, has caused so far 69 deaths and more than a hundred injuries, 21 of them admitted to the ICU. The accident took place on Wednesday first thing in the morning, when an AVE train collided at high speed with another convoy from the company Iryo that remained stopped on the track in the middle of an incident in the security systems.
