The Japanese animation studio Studio Ghibli has been distinguished this Wednesday with the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities. The jury announced the decision at 12:00 PM at the Hotel Eurostars de la Reconquista, in Oviedo.
The studio is recognized for its animated feature films, although it has also produced short films, television commercials, and a television film. It was founded on June 15, 1985, by directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, along with producer Toshio Suzuki, following the success of the anime film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984), made by Topcraft. Additionally, Studio Ghibli has collaborated with video game studios on the visual design of various titles.
This award is the second of the eight international awards convened this year by the Princess of Asturias Foundation, which celebrates its XLVI edition. On this occasion, 48 candidacies from 20 countries competed.
The award ceremony for this edition will be held on October 23, 2026, at the Campoamor Theater in Oviedo. As usual, it will be presided over by the King and Queen of Spain, with the attendance of the Princess of Asturias who will deliver a speech in honor of all the award winners.
The Princess of Asturias Awards aim, according to their regulations, to recognize "the scientific, technical, cultural, social, and humanitarian work carried out by individuals, institutions, groups of individuals, or institutions internationally". In this vein, the Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities distinguishes "the work of cultivation and improvement of sciences and disciplines considered as humanistic activities and of what is related to the social communication media in all its expressions".
