Next Monday, November 9, 2026 will be a public holiday in Madrid, the capital, on the occasion of the celebration of Our Lady of La Almudena, patron saint of the city. However, it will not be a non-working day throughout Spain or across the Community of Madrid as a whole, so millions of workers will have to go to their jobs as normal.
The holiday comes barely a week after the All Saints’ Day long weekend, which made it possible to enjoy three consecutive days off in the autonomous communities that moved the celebration of November 1 to Monday, November 2, which this year fell on a Sunday.
Where is Monday, November 9, 2026 a holiday?
The 9th of November is a local holiday in the municipality of Madrid, where the day of Our Lady of La Almudena is celebrated. It is one of the two local holidays included in the labor calendar of the capital for 2026, together with San Isidro, which was celebrated last May 15.
Therefore, Monday, November 9, will not be a holiday across the entire Community of Madrid. Municipalities such as Móstoles, Alcalá de Henares, Getafe, Leganés, Fuenlabrada, or Alcobendas will maintain their usual working activity, except for any exceptions that may apply for other reasons.
The holiday also does not have national status, so elsewhere in Spain it will, in general, be a working day.
When is the next holiday in Spain
Once November 9 has passed, the 2026 labor calendar reserves its next major public holiday dates for December, when the Day of the Constitution, the Immaculate Conception, and Christmas will be observed.
Constitution Day is celebrated on the 6th of December, which this year falls on a Sunday. Some autonomous communities, including Madrid, move the public holiday to the Monday, December 7.
The day after, on the Tuesday, December 8, the Immaculate Conception is celebrated, a national public holiday throughout Spain.
December 2026 long weekend: which days are holidays
The December calendar will allow you to enjoy a four-day consecutive long weekend in the autonomous communities that have declared the Monday, December 7, a holiday.
-
Saturday, December 5: usual weekend rest.
-
Sunday, December 6: Constitution Day.
-
Monday, December 7: holiday in the communities that move the celebration of the Constitution.
-
Tuesday, December 8: Immaculate Conception Day, a public holiday throughout Spain.
Thus, those who have the weekend free and work in a community where December 7 is a public holiday will be able to enjoy four consecutive days off, from Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8 December, without needing to request vacation.
In communities where Monday 7 is a working day, Tuesday 8 will still be a public holiday, although it will be necessary to have that Monday off in order to link the four days.
Christmas 2026: the last national public holiday of the year
The last national public holiday of 2026 will be the Friday 25 December, Christmas Day, which will be observed throughout Spain.
As it falls on a Friday, it will allow another weekend of three consecutive days to be enjoyed, from 25 to 27 December, by workers who have Saturdays and Sundays off.
In this way, the work calendar will close the year with two opportunities for extended rest: the December bridge, depending on the autonomous community, and the Christmas weekend.
