According to estimates in the report, it forecasts an average increase of 9% in the cost of medical plans for 2027 in Spain

Aon plc  (NYSE: AON), the leading global professional services firm, has published its report 2027 Global Medical Trend Rates. In Spain, the report forecasts that the average increase in the cost of medical plans for 2027 will be 9%, compared with a 10% increase in 2026. In this case, it matches the average percentage increase that Aon projects for the cost of medical plans at the global level.

The report is published at a time of persistent global uncertainty, from ongoing geopolitical tensions to the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence. Despite these challenges, inflation is moderating in many parts of the world and currency markets have generally stabilized, which helps reduce some of the underlying pressures driving increases in medical costs. Thus, it is expected that medical trend rates will moderate in most regions in 2027.

Main conditions that will drive costs in 2027

  • Cancer/tumor growth: It was identified as the first condition in Spain and in another 25 countries, being one of the top five in all regions. Cancer continues to raise treatment costs and increase the demand for specialized care.
  • Cardiovascular diseases: It is the second condition in Spain and was among the three leading conditions in all regions, with a greater impact on claims in APAC, Europe and LAC. More than 25 countries cited it as the condition with the highest impact.
  • High blood pressure/hypertension: It is especially relevant in the Middle East and Latin America, where 14 countries identified it as the condition with the highest impact. In addition to its direct effect on claim costs, hypertension plays an important role in the development of cardiovascular diseases and other high-cost conditions. In Spain, third place is occupied by mental health.

As noted by Carmen Burgos, Managing Director of Health Solutions at Aon Spain, "this approach makes it possible to better manage spending and help improve employees' health. It is not only a matter of addressing the forecast increase, but of strengthening a long-term benefits strategy. In that task, the data make it possible to understand what factors are behind spending and guide decisions without losing sight of the value of coverage".
