Adigital, the Spanish Association of the Digital Economy, has celebrated over two days in Brussels the second edition of Spain Digital Week, a meeting that has brought together European institutional leaders, representatives of different administrations and Spanish technology companies to address Spain’s role in the renewed European agenda for competitiveness and digital transformation.

The general director of Adigital, César Tello, has underscored that Europe is facing a key moment for its competitiveness and global leadership, and has emphasized that Spain has capabilities, talent and a business ecosystem that can assume an increasingly relevant role in that transformation, with the aim of increasing the country’s presence and influence.

Within the framework of the event, the Permanent Representation of Spain to the European Union has been the setting for a new meeting of the Spanish Council for European Digitalization, inaugurated by the deputy permanent representative ambassador of Spain to the EU, Oriol Escalas.

In this space for debate, Adigital has made known a document in which Spain’s contribution to the new European agenda for competitiveness is analyzed.

The report highlights strengths such as the proposal to host an artificial intelligence (AI) gigafactory, the fact of having the fourth largest national contingent in the community institutions or the push for the first EU sandbox for the AI Regulation.

In the same way, it identifies lines of action such as the launch of a National Plan for Critical Technologies or progress in the digitalization of sectors considered strategic.

The debate tables have included the intervention of the deputy director general of DG CONNECT, Renate Nikolay, as well as representatives of DG GROW, DG RTD, DG DEFIS, the European Innovation Council, the European Parliament, the AESIA and the CSIC.

For her part, the executive vice president of the European Commission, Henna Virkkunen, has highlighted the country’s role in digital transformation.

The second day, held at the headquarters of the CSIC in Brussels, has focused on technological diplomacy and on strengthening cooperation between the European Union and Latin America.

The opening session featured the president of the European Investment Bank (EIB), Nadia Calviño, who underlined that Europe must move forward in its own model that combines collaboration and openness to take advantage of the potential of artificial intelligence.

Also taking part in the meeting were the secretary general for innovation of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, Teresa Riesgo, the deputy head of the International Affairs Unit of DG Connect, Gabriele Bertolli, and the director of the Brussels Office of AECID, Enric-Sol Brines, along with other institutional and private-sector representatives.

With this initiative, the organization reinforces its commitment to placing Spain at the center of the debates that will shape Europe’s technological and economic future, consolidating the country as a leading digital hub and natural bridge with Latin America.
